What to Know Before You Buy in the Augusta Area
Augusta summers are long, hot, and humid, and the ground ranges from red clay in Columbia County to sand toward Hephzibah and Aiken.
- Plan for airflow. If you'll store mowers, tools, or anything that can mildew, ask about windows or vents so heat and moisture have a way out.
- Match the base to your soil. Compacted gravel drains well on clay. On sandy ground, make sure the pad is firm and level so the building doesn't settle unevenly.
- Moving in a few years? If a military move or new job might be coming, a portable building can be relocated to your next property, which a shed built in place can't.
Shed Permits in Augusta-Richmond County
Augusta-Richmond County is a consolidated government, so permits inside the county go through Augusta Planning & Development at 535 Telfair Street, Suite 300, Augusta.
Under Georgia's adopted residential code, a one-story storage shed of 120 square feet or less is generally exempt from a building permit. Larger buildings usually need one, adding electricity usually needs an electrical permit, and setbacks apply at every size.
Confirm before you order by calling (706) 821-1796 or visiting augustaga.gov. In Grovetown, Evans, or elsewhere in Columbia County, or across the river in South Carolina, check with your own county or city, since each sets its own rules.
