What to Know About Mountain Properties Near Murphy
Most properties around Murphy and Hayesville are wooded and sloped, and winters bring freeze-and-thaw cycles.
- Level on concrete or compacted gravel. A solid, level base keeps the building from shifting as the ground freezes and thaws, so doors keep closing square.
- Clear the canopy. Low limbs over a wooded drive are the most common delivery problem. Trim anything under 16 feet along the route.
- Plan for permits early. North Carolina's rule for sheds is stricter than Georgia's (see below), so factor permit time into your order.
Shed Permits in Cherokee County, NC
In Cherokee County, permits go through Building Code Enforcement at 911 Andrews Road, Murphy.
Under the North Carolina Residential Code, an accessory building with any dimension greater than 12 feet has to meet the code and needs a building permit. Most of our buildings are longer than 12 feet, so plan on a permit. Adding electricity needs its own permit, and zoning setbacks apply at every size.
Confirm before you order by calling (828) 837-6730 or visiting cherokeecounty-nc.gov. Clay, Graham, and Macon counties each have their own inspections office.
