What to Know About Gainesville-Area Yards

Around Lake Lanier and up toward the mountains, many lots are sloped and the ground is mostly Georgia red clay. Plan for both before delivery day.

  • Level the site first. On a slope, a gravel pad or concrete piers keep the shed square, so the doors keep opening and closing smoothly for years.
  • Think about the route. Lake homes often sit below the road at the bottom of a steep drive. Send your dealer a few photos of the path so the crew can plan the way in. If a finished building can't get there, ask about on-site construction.
  • Check your HOA. Newer neighborhoods in south Hall around Flowery Branch and Braselton often have rules on shed size, color, and placement.
Permits

Shed Permits in Hall County

In unincorporated Hall County, permits go through the Building Inspections Division at 2875 Browns Bridge Road, Gainesville.

The county requires a building permit for an accessory building over 144 square feet. A smaller building also needs one if it sits on a permanent foundation such as a concrete slab, or if it will have electricity or plumbing. The county says sheds under 144 square feet can sit 5 feet from rear and side property lines.

Confirm before you order by calling (770) 531-6809, option 1, or visiting hallcounty.org. Inside the city limits of Gainesville, Oakwood, Flowery Branch, or another city, check with that city's office. Banks, Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, and White counties each set their own rules.
