What to Know About Upstate Yards
The Upstate runs from flat suburban lots around Simpsonville and Greer to steep foothill property north of Travelers Rest.
- Check the HOA rules early. Many subdivisions around Simpsonville, Five Forks, and Greer limit shed size, color, and placement. Get the rules before you order so the siding and roof can match your home.
- Plan for the slope. On foothill lots, a level gravel pad or concrete piers keep the building square and the doors working right.
- Measure your gate. Fenced backyards are common here. You'll need an opening about 2 feet wider than the building, or a fence panel you can take down on delivery day.
Shed Permits in Greenville County
In unincorporated Greenville County, building permits go through Building Safety at 301 University Ridge, Suite 4100, Greenville. Applications are filed online.
South Carolina uses a statewide residential code, but the size at which a shed needs a permit, and the setbacks it has to meet, depend on where you live. Adding electricity usually needs a separate permit.
Confirm before you order by calling the county permit center at (864) 467-7060 or visiting greenvillecounty.org. Inside the City of Greenville, Greer, Mauldin, Simpsonville, or another city, check with that city. Pickens and Spartanburg counties have their own offices.
